Sail to Iceland with Norröna between April and mid-November, travelling from Hirtshals in Denmark via Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands to Seyðisfjörður in East Iceland.
In summer, Norröna sails to Iceland weekly on a 2-night crossing, departing Hirtshals on Tuesdays. In spring and autumn, the crossing runs weekly over 3 nights, departing Hirtshals on Sundays.

How long does the ferry from Denmark to Iceland take?
The sailing from Hirtshals, Denmark to Seyðisfjörður, Iceland takes approximately 2 days and 16 hours. If you stop over in the Faroe Islands, the total journey time will be longer depending on how long you choose to stay.
Where does the ferry to Iceland depart from, and where does it arrive?
The ferry departs from Hirtshals in northern Denmark and arrives in Seyðisfjörður in East Iceland. On the way, the route passes through the Faroe Islands, where a stopover is possible.
How often does the ferry sail to Iceland?
The ferry sails weekly from April to late November. During the summer months there are two weekly departures from Denmark to the Faroe Islands, with one of these continuing to Iceland.
Can I bring my own car on the ferry to Iceland?
Yes. Bringing your own vehicle is one of the biggest advantages of traveling to Iceland with Smyril Line. You can bring a car, camper, 4×4, or motorcycle — giving you the freedom to explore Iceland entirely on your own terms, without relying on rental cars or tour schedules.
Are there any restrictions on vehicle size or type?
Most standard vehicles, campervans, and motorcycles are welcome onboard. If you are traveling with an oversized vehicle, we recommend contacting us directly before booking to confirm availability and pricing.
Can I stop in the Faroe Islands on the way to Iceland?
Yes. The route goes via the Faroe Islands, and you can choose to stop over on either the outbound or return leg of your journey — or both. It is a great way to experience two unique North Atlantic destinations in one trip
Do I have to book the Faroe Islands stopover separately?
Yes, a stopover in the Faroe Islands needs to be booked as a separate leg of your journey. You can do this easily through our booking system, where you select your preferred dates for both the Denmark–Faroe Islands and Faroe Islands–Iceland sailings.
Do I need a cabin on the ferry to Iceland?
Given the length of the crossing, we strongly recommend booking a cabin. The journey takes nearly three days in total, and a cabin makes the experience significantly more comfortable. We offer a range of options from budget-friendly inside cabins to spacious suites.
What facilities are available onboard?
MS Norröna offers a full range of onboard facilities including multiple restaurants and cafés, an outdoor seawater hot tub, a fitness centre, a cinema, and various lounges. There is plenty to keep you comfortable and entertained throughout the crossing.
How far in advance should I book the ferry to Iceland?
We recommend booking as early as possible, especially if you are traveling in peak season — June, July, and August. Popular departures with vehicle spaces can sell out several months in advance. Booking early also gives you the best choice of cabins and the most competitive prices.
