Explore the North Atlantic ocean

The cruise period

Departure every Saturday in the period:

26.03 – 28.05.2022
03.09 – 22.10.2022

Full board cruise incl. excursions

The North Atlantic Cruise is a full board cruise including 4 excursions. The cruise comes in two different variations; PREMIUM and DELUXE. You will have a one week roundtrip to the past exploring the North Atlantic ocean, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. You arrive by sea the way they did, the Vikings. Watching the cliffs rise out of the rolling waves. The only difference is that on board Norröna you have all the things they did not have: good food, comfortable beds, entertainment and time to enjoy a leisurely crossing.

2 destinations - 3 stops

This one week North Atlantic Cruise has three stops. The departure from Hirtshals is on Saturday. Monday we stop for 6 hours in Tórshavn, Tuesday to Wednesday for 35 hours in Seyðisfjörður, and Thursday for 6 hours in Tórshavn on the way back to Denmark.

Included are two excursions in Iceland and one in the Faroe Islands on the way to Iceland and one on the return journey. The duration of the cruise is one week, meaning that you arrive back in Hirtshals the following Saturday.

Programme

Our programme is put together with films about the Faroe Islands and Iceland, bingo and other entertainment. However there is also time to relax. Take a walk on the sundeck, soak up the fresh sea breeze, listen to the waves and enjoy a stunning view, get culinary adventures and enjoy a cup of coffee in Laterna Magica or a delicious cocktail in Undirhúsið, while listening to live music.

See the programme for the cruise further down on this page.

Historical Kirkjubøur

Kirkjubøur is the historical heart of the Faroes. The little village is located on the southwest coast of Streymoy and offers a stunning view of the islands Hestur and Koltur. In the Middle Ages it was the Faroese Episcopal See, which made it the country’s spiritual and cultural hub.

On this excursion we will drive through Tórshavn, quite possibly the world’s smallest capital, and then up across beautiful mountains, past the village Velbastað clinging to the steep slopes. The bus trip will be both scenic and informative, as it is guided in English, Danish and German. The local farmer will be ready to greet us in Kirkjubø and guide us on a visit to the enigmatic Magnus Cathedral, built around the year 1300 by Bishop Erlendur, and then to St. Olaf’s Church and the Kirkjubøargarður estate farmhouse (Roykstovan), a stave house dating back to the turn of the first millennium, it is said to be the world’s oldest inhabited wooden house. To round off the visit, our host will invite us for hot drinks and pastries in the atmospheric Roykstovan. Included in this bus tour is also a guided walk in the old part of Tórshavn.

Lake Mývatn & Dettifoss

On this day trip we drive from Seyðisfjörður up to the beautiful 620 m high mountain pass, Fjarðarheiði, and further down to the town of Egilsstaðir. The trip continues through the breathtaking valley, Jökuldalurin, and we will make a short photo stop at the dark desert landscape, Dimmufjallgarður. During the trip we pass Horseborg, where several movie scenes for major Hollywood productions have been filmed. We will make a stop at Námafjall, where we will see roaring pseudocrats and steamy sulphates. We are going to see the bubbly mud puddles and walk on the geothermal mud. We will make a stop at the Mývatn Nature Bath, where we will have a light lunch.

A must on this trip is to bathe in the hot water from geothermal sources (entrence fee not included). Afterwards we will visit Dimmuborgir, which is an interesting lava landscape. On our return trip we drive to Dettifoss, which is a waterfall in northern Iceland. The waterfall is 44 m high and 100 m wide and has an average water flow rate of 193 cubic meters per second, making Dettifoss Europe’s most powerful waterfall. This is without a doubt the highlight of the trip. Dettifoss is particulary weather dependet.

Lake Lögurinn

We drive to Egilsstaðir and further along the southeastern bank of Lake Lögurinn, where we pass the beautiful Hallormsstaðarskógur, which is the largest forest in Iceland. Our next stop is Skriðuklaustur – Cultural Centre East Iceland – a near millennium-old manor, turned cloister and finally cultural institute, Gunnarstofnun, dedicated to Gunnar Gunnarsson, one of Iceland’s most renowned 20th century authors. During our stay there, a lunch buffet will be served in the charming manor café, Klausturkaffi.

Right next to the cultural institute lies Snæfellsstofa, the Visitors’ Centre built for the Vatnajökull National Park, which is Europe’s largest. Finally, on our way back, we will have about an hour stop for relaxing or strolling in Egilsstaðir before we head to Seyðisfjörður.

Nes & Toftir

We drive from Tórshavn to the village of Nes on Eysturoy through the subsea tunnel connecting Streymoy and Eysturoy. In Nes we will learn what running a modern-day sheep farm entails, right among Torkilsheyggur farm’s woolly flock. To round of our visit, the farmers will treat us to homemade rhubarb cordial and samples of the unique Faroese cured sheep delicacies skerpikjøt and ræst kjøt.

Our next stop will be Navia’s flagship store. As one of the Faroe Islands’ leading yarn and sweater brands, Navia is widely known on the international market. The company ships its products to a dozen different countries. At Navia we will have a chance to see and buy the finished products from Torkilsheyggur farm. Then we will drive to Norðagøta, where we will see the statue of Tróndur í Gøtu. Tróndur í Gøtu is a central figure in Faroese saga. He was a Viking era chieftain, and one of the most powerful men in the Faroe Islands.

On the trip back to Tórshavn we will drive up to the old main road over the mountains. There will be photo stops during the excursion.

North Atlantic Cruise buffet

Friday evening, when the North Atlantic Cruise is nearing its end, we celebrate our adventures with a North Atlantic Cruise Buffet offering original dishes from the Viking Age (800-1150). The Vikings were more than fearsome warriors, they were also culinary explorers, who discovered and disseminated new raw materials, food preparation techniques and storage methods.

After an exhaustive search for authentic recipes and ingredients, such as fish, meat, poultry and spices from Viking times, we have put an enticing buffet together with a plethora of original dishes from the Viking Age.
