If you really want to get away from it all, the interior of Iceland is like nothing you have ever experienced. Here is a trip for adventurous people, who want to see the most important sites of Iceland and also get a taste of the uninhabited Highlands. This trip involves driving through a few rivers, to drive this program you do need a good 4x4 drive car, and not the smallest types!

Fjallabak literally means “behind the mountains”, here hidden behind Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull lies a vast untouched wilderness like no other in the world. Here glaciers reach for the skies, deep blue mountain lakes fill steep valleys with sharp green peaks on all sides. Lost hot springs in secluded valleys far, far away from civilization will relax and calm you as you take in the spectacular views.

The moun-tainous centre of the island, with its rocky deserts, jagged mountain peaks, ice caps, volcanoes, hidden valleys and hot springs, is an awe-inspiring and un-touched wilderness.

A short but very comprehensive tour, which involves quite a bit of driving: a total of 1450-1600 km. The route goes to the most exciting spots in the highland and also includes the "musts" of Iceland. It is necessary to drive this program in a 4x4 drive car, and not the smallest types! This trip can be made from late July through August.

Day 1:

After disembarking from Norröna, you drive from Seyðisfjörður to Egilsstaðir, making short stops at the waterfalls along the way. After a look around in Egilsstaðir, you drive through Skriðdalur valley and to Breiðdalsheidi mountain pass, where you have a choice: you can drive through Breiðdalur valley, where the children at some of the farms sell colourful stones they have found in the mountains. You can also opt for a more adventurous track that brings you straight to Berufjörður fjord. Then you drive along the eastern fjords over winding roads, enjoying lovely views. You pass the tiny village of Djúpivogur and from there the road continues to Höfn, a larger community and an important fisheries harbour. You stay overnight either in Djúpivogur or in Höfn.

Day 2:

First you drive to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where large icebergs float around. It's possible to make an optional boat-trip on the lagoon. Then, take some time to visit Skaftafel
