Smyril Line is expanding its fleet
Smyril Line has signed an agreement to acquire a RoRo freight vessel, from Finnish shipping company Bore, which is a part of Spliethoff Group.
M/V Mykines, previously named Auto Baltic, was built in 1996 at the UMOE Sterkoder shipyard in Norway. The vessel is 138.5 metres long and 22.6 metres wide. Smyril Line expects to receive the vessel around April 1, 2017. With this new addition Smyril Line’s fleet will grow to four vessels: Mykines, Norrøna, Eystnes and Hvítanes.
Smyril Line intends to establish a new freight route connecting Thorlakshofn, located on Iceland’s west coast approximately 35 minutes from Reykjavík, to Rotterdam in the Netherlands via the Faroe Islands.
This new route will enable Faroese importers to receive goods mid week directly from Rotterdam. In addition, Faroese export companies will get a new opportunity to export goods directly to Rotterdam, which offers a host of possibilities for connecting with markets near and far.
Icelandic importers and exporters will benefit from this new Rotterdam-Tórshavn-Thorlakshofn route as it will offer excellent transit times and a RoRo connection to and from the Reykjavík area.
M/V Mykines will bolster competitiveness
The addition to the route network will also generate entirely new possibilities. By transhipping cargo in the Faroe Islands Smyril Line will be linking Russia, the Baltic region and Denmark to the Reykjavík area, while also offering east Iceland and the Faroe Islands a connection to the Netherlands and Central Europe.
The plan is for the new freight vessel to sail into Thorlakshofn on Fridays, Rotterdam on Mondays and Tórshavn on Wednesdays.
This acquisition would cement Smyril Line’s position as the only RoRo transport provider in the North Atlantic. Smyril Line will be able to offer its customers even better service and a broader range of flexible and efficient transport solutions.
By expanding its freight grid, Smyril Line wishes to strengthen its cargo customers’ competitiveness, enabling them to offer their clients better service, more opportunities, excellent transit times and greater flexibility.
