After Eyjafjallajökull with its clouds of ash for long has produced newsheadlines across Europe, the outbreak has now come to a standstill. In the last three weeks no ash nor lava has been produced, and only a white column of steam can be seen. The Icelandic authorities have declared the outbreak over, and all regulatory action has been set. Like all other volcanoes in Iceland, Eyjafjallajökull is now only monitored through continuous routine measurements, like before the eruption.
The regionally fallen ash quantities have already been washed away by precipitation in many places, and do not represent a threat nor an obstacle, especially since only one section thereof is directly affected by the volcano.
The Eyjafjallajökull is currently a visitor attraction in Iceland. The white steam column, which according to geologists will probably be on display for weeks, is easily observed, the new still warm lava field is the goal of some excursions on the ground, and the melted ice gorges, characterized by lava and heat, can be viewed particularly well in a round flight.
Smyril Line offers numerous ways to experience the many attractions of Iceland this summer, and perhaps also to use this unique opportunity to experience the traces of recent volcanic eruption.
The recent eruption is thus an ideal opportunity for visitors to explore the unique nature of the island.
